Blame for the government shutdown has been tossed around consistently and constantly since the stalemate began. Many say both sides are to blame, which I am more apt to accept in most cases, however this is not one of them.
The Republicans lay blame at the feet of the democrats because they are not willing to delay Obamacare, the law of the land for over three years now. The House GOP has voted to strip the Affordable Care Act bit by bit piece by piece since it was signed into law. They have attempted to defund it; stopping at nothing to prevent this law from coming to full fruition, or at minimum, dooming it to failure before it has a chance to get off the ground.
The law's approval rating has been cited as rationale for delaying implementation. This is ludicrous. We do not base our laws off of opinion polls. If we did that background checks for gun's would be in place along with an assault weapons ban. Campaign finance would be completely public and medical marijuana would be legal if public opinion created our laws. The fact of the matter is, whether it was rammed down our throats or passed by parliamentary rules of the house, whether it is socialism and the end of America or a more affordable way for people to get health care, the ACA is the law and needs to go into effect. Laws get implemented all the time that one part likes and the other does not. Just because you lose a battle doesn't mean you need to surrender your principles or surrender the entire war. No one expects the GOP to like Obamacare or back it in any way shape or form. But what the American people expect is for them to suck it up do their jobs and move on to the next battle.
The GOP, mainly the Tea Party, has become so focused, so obsessed with Obamacare that they have lost sight of everything else. They have shut down the government and will let the country go into default over a law that has been on the books for three years. This is not a bill, this is the law. The Supreme Court found the Affordable Care Act constitutional. Whether this law is good for America or bad is yet to be seen, but it is the law and it needs to be followed.
The stubborness of the GOP, holding the government and the full faith and credit of the United States hostage is petty and shows the extremism that controls the party. According to a Quinnipiac poll at the end of September 47-45 disfavor Obamacare. However, when it comes to whether the law should be funded the numbers change 58-34 support funding the ACA. 72-22 oppose shutting down the government to delay Obamacare and nearly a two thirds majority, 64-27, oppose letting the country default for the same reason, delaying the ACA. The Republicans refused to go to conference with the democrats in order to avert a government shut down until 11:30 pm the night of the shut down. Thirty minutes is all they gave.
The Democrats are not to blame on this one. Could they have come in more good faith, sure. But the GOP is the party of small government, it is the party of government is the problem, the party that shut down the government for over 20 days in '95. The GOP is to blame for this shut down and will be to blame if we do not raise the debt ceiling. The ACA is law and the public does not support this bickering and using a government shutdown and the debt ceiling as bartering chips in order to promote the GOP's platform because they could not win the Presidency. This will only lead to more partisanship, more turmoil, more economic instability, more debt for average families, and a country that is worse off than when we started down this path. These precedents that have been broken cannot be a norm. However if the GOP continues with this strategy when they are the minority then the US does not have sunny days ahead.
