On Wednesday morning Joe Scarborough on Morning Joe commented on the current state of the GOP and their hatred for President Obama. To summarize, he stated that many of the democrats throughout the previous presidency had bush derangement syndrome. It seems now that the Republicans are inflicted with Obama derangement syndrome. This cuts to the core of a central issue that is extremely prevalent on the right presently, blind partisan hatred. America has been divided into two political camps for a long time now, this is nothing new. There have been times in our history in which parties became vehemently opposed to one another. What we are currently experiencing is a whole new evolution of partisanship. Over the past 30 years with each changing of the guard the amount of party based politics instead of policy based governance our politics and our country has taken a nose dive into the sewer, and it's costing us in more than just our government.
To set the record straight, partisanship happens on both sides, especially when the other party holds the Presidency. If a democratic president is hated by the GOP and called a socialist etc etc, you can bet the next GOP President will not be warmly welcomed by the democrats. If any proof is needed, when George W Bush was elected many democrats were very eager to call for his impeachment... something that would have seemed absurd had the GOP lead House had not impeached President Clinton for lying about an extramarital affair. Meanwhile the Speaker of the GOP led House, Newt Gingrich, was currently involved in an extramarital affair and lying about it in public. If the GOP did not impeach President Clinton the hatred for Bush and call for his impeachment would have been lessened.
The problem is that the more our politicians propagate this childish behavior the more it bleeds into the public. News organizations start picking sides, polarizing our politics and our country even further. Is it any wonder that Fox News was started in the 90's? By the time George W Bush was President Fox News had become the official news station of the right, calling anyone who disagreed with President Bush un-American, treasonous, or a traitor. There were cases of some on the right telling liberals that if they didn't like how President Bush was running the country they could leave. What is more unamerican than that? Now Fox News is solely dedicated to the dismantling of President Obama and revitalizing the right from the devastating losses they experienced in 2008 and the lack of leadership within the GOP. The left media is more sly about their bias. They often give some of the conservative argument but will often leave parts out that may not fit their narrative. It takes a much more attuned eye to catch some of these. However, their bias for the President, and protecting his electability is blatantly obvious. Certain stories are nearly blacked out in the media and he is defended to no avail, even though his record on civil rights is no better, if not worse than George W Bush's. The blade of partisanship cuts both ways and enough is enough.
The current brand of mudslinging we see from the right towards President Obama is absolutely disgusting. There has never in the history of the United States been such a concerted effort to prove he was not born in the US. The right has labeled him as elitist, out of touch, etc etc. What they are really saying is he is not like you. Many use this political technique with racist undertones, others do it outright, while others simply label him "other". The Senate Minority leader outright stated his number one goal was to ensure a one term Obama Presidency. there is a long list of remarks stating that the main priority presently for the GOP is to defeat Obama. This is their main policy, oppose President Obama. It is a joke. It is causing our nation to stagnate and confidence to fall through the floor. Congress' approval rating is at an all time low 11%. When one political party's main proposal is No to everything the President who happens to be of the opposing party, is it any wonder our economy refuses to restart, and confidence in our government is at an all time low? As a caveat, to believe that the current hatred of President Obama will not taint the left to automatically hate the next Republican President is ignorant. And what will this lead to, more of the same stagnation and no solutions.
To those on the right, if you are truly worried about the direction of this country, that our kids and their grandkids will be so strapped with debt that we will become a third world nation, if you truly want the country to do well, then why are you doubling down on the tactics that you hated so much that were assailed upon your party and your President during the Bush administration?
To those on the left, if you are truly sick of the partisanship shown by the right, that all of the name calling, the defaming of President Obama's character, and the vile remarks spouted on Fox News and many right wing media outlets, then stop turning a blind eye to your own parties ills so you can have some credibility when you try and chastise the right for mudslinging. Two wrongs do not make a right. We need the adults in the room to stand up, and they are few and far between. And when a Republican wins the Presidency in the future, which will happen at some point in time, remember the destructiveness the vile remarks and obama derangement syndrome had not only on politics, but the entire nation.
If we all truly want to turn this country around, get the economy going and give us a chance to make a better future for us and the entire world it's not very hard. There are plenty of good ideas out there. Spend any amount of time on the internet browsing blogs and independent media on the left and right and you will find gems all over the place. The problem is that both sides have the volume dials cranked up to ten and and earplugs firmly implanted. We won't talk to one another, and when we do, we don't listen. We have divulged into a country in which if someone does not share the same beliefs as you politically you are viewed as either an idiot, brainwashed, or the enemy. We are all Americans, none of us are the enemy. If you want to turn this country around, shut up and listen. Put your pride aside, your preconceived notions at the door, and an open mind. It's time to be constructive not destructive. No one in this country wants to kill it, not Democrats, not Republicans. If we start listening to each other and start coming up with solutions, it won't be long until our government follows suit. The question is, are we willing to grow up and put the partisanship aside? If not now, when?
** I do realize that there are those on both sides that do listen to the other side and do try to be constructive and do not fit into this broad brush stroke. The problem is that the number of those who subscribe to this practice has grown too large and our politics and our country are being devastated by it. I do not believe it is the public's fault that this has happened, simply that we have fallen into it willingly.**
