In the course of human events there comes a time when the people must throw off the chains of oppression and assert their will for the common good. For far too long we have seen the rich and powerful use their position of privilege to propagate personal profit and power, purposefully putting the people poor, penniless, impoverished, pauperized and powerless. As the late George Carlin stated, “The owners of this country know the truth: It's called the American dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.” Our depraved government has rotten to the very core, creating such calcification that it can no longer perform the most routine of tasks. The people are no longer in control of their government, their will has been subverted by special interests and outright bribery legalized by the Supreme Court. We the 99% have had enough. We the 99% will no longer sit idly by and go quietly into the night. On this day we stand determined to address these ills that inhibit our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.
This movement, Occupy Wall Street, is for the disenfranchised, the disillusioned, the destitute and the damned.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me:
I lift my lamp beside the golden door. “
This movement, this idea, is ours. To the millions of student's who took out school loans, graduating with no job prospects, no way to pay off their bills, and cannot eliminate through bankruptcy, this movement is ours. To the millions of laid off workers due to outsourcing in the name of the all mighty dollar, this movement is ours. To the millions who were given mortgages though they should not have qualified so Wall Street could keep it's ponzi scheme going only to be bailed out leaving us with the bill, and no bail out for main street; to the millions who cannot receive health insurance due to pre-existing conditions, putting into question their very right to life, this movement is ours; to those who know deep down, that there is something seriously wrong with our country, that profit before people has become the status quo, that our government, media, and our very nation has been bought and sold to the highest bidder catering to whatever special interest holds the most chips, not the public's support. This is our movement, we are the 99%.
We must no longer be silenced by those who wish to control our lives. We are not machines built for consumption, we are people, and corporations are not. We must stand together, as one, united. It is now or never, if we wait, it will be too late. Now is the time to act, now is the time to end the corruption, end the greed, end the perverse government business collusion to shackle and enslave the population of this great nation to the troughs whose sole purpose is to consume. We all know this to be the truth. We trade away our rights for the false promise of security and prosperity. New threats of terrorism, disease, plague, and famine run rampant in the mainstream media. With the threat of terrorism realized with the attacks on 9/11, at the peak of our fear, it is not coincidence that it is here again in NYC that we the people stand up and show we are not afraid. A decade later, we have had enough. We are no longer scared of Islamic fundamentalists over seas with a vendetta against the actions of our government. We are angry at our system, that multinational corporations have bought our government, subverting popular sovereignty, and propagating a plutocracy. We no longer live in a democratic republic. We no longer have a voice in our government. We the 99% demand what is promised to us by our founding fathers, a government of the people by the people and for the people, to promote the general welfare, and to secure our liberties, of which life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, are paramount. It is time we assert our rights, our freedoms, our lives, and let our voices be heard. We are the 99% and we will not be silenced. We will not go quietly into the night. We are here and we will not go down with out a fight.
